Making your own inexpensive potting mix (video)

- 30% peat moss or coco coir
- 30% perlite or vermiculite

Miracle Grow potting mix works great or you can mix your own by using 2/3rds peat moss and 1/3 well rotted manure or compost and a couple of good handfuls of perlite. It lightens the soil. I also add about a cup of garden lime or dolomite, I also throw in a handful of Epsom salts.
A standard batch I will make would be 2 5 gallon buckets of peat 1 bucket of compost or well rotted manure 1 cup garden lime and a handful Epsom salts.
In summary:
2 five gallon buckets full peat moss
1 five gallon bucket Well rotted horse manure or compost or worm castings
1 and 1/2 cup Garden lime
1 large coffee can full of perlite
1 handful of Epsom salts

Green materials include kitchen scraps, garden debris and grass clipping. Brown material include fallen leaves, dried stems or sawdust. Don't add meat, dairy, grease or bones to your compost.
2. Add water - Watering your compost helps speed up the composting process.
3. Bring on the Heat - Your compost will heat up and the inside of your tumbler should be about 140 degrees.
4. Tumble or Stir - Tumbling your compost will help to speed up the composting process.
If you keep it well watered and turned, you will have compost in about a month. It is ready when there is no more heat coming off it.

Here are some Indoor Growing Tips by Ray from the Praxxus55712 YouTube channel:
Among the tips:
- make your own potting soil based on coconut coir and vermiculitie
- germinate the seeds with a heat pad (Ray bought a general purpose heat pad from a secondhand store for $2).
- add a small amount of fertilizer every time you water plants - 1/4 of the weekly amount. A little feeding every day works better than a large feeding once a week.
Ray makes his own fertilizer with urea, potash and bone meal. He bought them on Ebay in 25# boxes, no name brand, sold in bulk. He mixes them himself.
Ray leaves the tap water overnight to release chlorine, and then waters the plants the next day.
- one large 85W CFLs covers 4 x 4 ft. area. Ray recommends 5,700 K for both vegetation and flowers: http://www.1000bulbs.com/product/64252/FC85-S50HOD.html
He has 12 of those large CFLs. One regular CFLs covers a 1 x 1 ft. area.
Ray's entire electric bill is $110 per month. The bulk of it is for furnace, garage lighting and home lights. "All of the lighting I use only costs $30 per month and heats the upstairs as a bonus, which saves me energy from having to use the home furnace to heat the upstairs.
One viewer commented: My rate is 19 cents per Kwh, which means a 105 watt bulb burning for 16 hours a day is about $9 per month by itself. Plus 11 more bulbs it would be $108 per month (in NY state).

Growing Power was started by Will Allen, who bought the Milwaukee farm in 1993.
Allen left a job at Procter & Gamble in 1993 and purchased Growing Power, a derelict plant nursery that was in foreclosure, located on the north side of Milwaukee. Allen currently serves as director of Growing Power, a now mature urban farming project in Milwaukee, with a 40-acre farm west of Milwaukee in the town of Merton and an off-shoot project in Chicago run by Allen's daughter.
Gowing Power is an urban agriculture organization headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It runs the last functional farm within the Milwaukee city limits and also maintains an active office in Chicago. Growing Power aims for sustainable food production, as well as the growth of communities through the creation of local gardens and Community Food Systems.
Its facilities include 7 large greenhouses, a kitchen, indoor and outdoor training gardens, aquaculture system and a food distribution facility. Fish, worms, bees, goats, chickens, turkeys, and ducks are also raised there. Growing Power conducts workshops and demonstrations in aquaculture, aquaponics, vermiculture, horticulture, small or large-scale composting, soil reclamation, food distribution, beekeeping, and marketing.
The farm grows a wide variety of fruit and vegetables, and also farms tilapia and perch through the use of aquaponics. Thousands of people tour the facilities every year.
